KJO Youth Competition Freestyle and River Run– 2008 it’s evolved!

When a program is as successful as the KJO freestyle program it is easy to sit back and think that’s it then, we are set. At KJO though that is never the way and there are always lots of new ideas to add to our programs. So here we go, into the new 2008 KJO Competition Freestyle program.

What are the Goals?

The program this year has been set out to achieve the following:

  • To hold at least two top five places at all major UK Freestyle competitions our athletes compete in.
  • To gain selection for national teams with 4 athletes.
  • To have our athletes competing in boater cross and white water down river races.
  • For our athletes to be cross discipline trained in both freestyle and river running.
  • To gain sponsorship arrangement for at least half of the KJO athletes.

What can the program provide me?

from a wide range of areas including:

  • Performance Integration Support for athletes who are often juggling different goals and challenges. The LTPD Programme provides support to athletes to manage their lives effectively in order to achieve sporting excellence.
  • Performance Support Services to assisting athletes with world class coaching and sports science (e.g. physical conditioner, sport psychologist and physiotherapy) based on individual athlete needs suitable times of the year for accessing services based on the individual athlete’s programme.
  • Transition Support during times of voluntary or forced transition. This could include dealing with injury, retirement, changing positions or event, or transitions into coaching.

Who is part of the KJO Performance Team?

To reach the goals a program alone would not be enough so we have assigned two lead coaches and assembled a truly world class team who can take this forwards.

  • Jacko – L5 Coach – GB team 97, 99, GB team coach 03, trained, coached and worked with 8 world champions.
  • Dennis Newton - L5 Coach – SW team 06, Performance Coach for GB team athletes including world and European Champions.

Specialist Coach's

Alan Ward – 2005 Junior World Freestyle Champion, Ed Smith - British and European Freestyle Champion, Elaine Farquarson – Physiotherapist, Tim Griffith – Neuro Linguistic Programming Practitioner, Tim Ward – Father of Alan talking about the parental role with young athletes, Shaun Baker – the worlds most famous kayaker – mental preparation for big water and competition, Marina Poza and Hila Coggans – how to get sponsored.

What are the generals of the sessions?

There is a load in the program and we have tried to provide theses options in a way whereby sessions do have a few standard elements, these are as follows

  • Warm up and three go competition
  • SWAT Analysis review
  • Previous comp review
  • Training plan review
  • Float time
  • Formal coaching towards agreed targets
  • Technical, Physical, Psychological and Tactical positioning
  • Videod competition runs

What Support services are available?

KJO will appoint a dedicated support coach to the program. That person will be able to provide support out of session times. The kind of things that they will help with are; -

  • Individual Performance Plan
  • Feedback on private session SWAT analysis.
  • Feedback on any private video you send them.
  • Requested call backs
  • Any other issues that may come up between sessions

In any evolving program there is a need to adapt and adopt as appropriate. To that end we will supply

  • After each session the competition runs will be scored and this information will be published on the KJO blog by the Friday of the following week.
  • Worksheets – these are presented in a fashion whereby there will be some follow up action by the athlete. This could be a simple exercise structure to develop a key motor or muscular development or something more diverse, like an action sheet from a support session where the athlete may need to find information on local Rotary Clubs, Councils or other possible sponsorship/ funding agencies.
  • Handouts these are presented in a fashion whereby they provide support information.
  • SWOT templates (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) – we supply the first SWAT template and explain how to use this. As the athletes establish a training log the SWAT forms a significant part off this and enables coaches a better understanding of both development and how the athlete thinks.
  • Congruence report – it is very important for a coach to know where there athletes own measurement of performance lies and then to establish congruence between there own ideas and the athletes. Congruence reports don’t happen too often but do provide a realistic tool to ensure the athlete is working on the areas where development is most needed.
  • The Video Diary – Every other session athletes will perform both pre determined sequenced and non sequenced rides. These will be video’d and time framed to allow a reflective opportunity to measure progression.

Parental and support commitment

At KJO we encourage parents to be part of their children’s education so we do like to see mums and dads turning up and supporting wherever possible. Many choose to come to training sessions and observe whilst others bring their dogs and go for a nice early morning walk. We do provide resource for parents and your child’s coach will form a relationship with you and more than likely give you some work to do.

Resources we can provide include.

  • Funding – how to establish funding sources and where to find them.
  • Diet and hydration for young athletes.
  • Establishing routine – the feel good factor.
  • Setting the tone for the best sessions.
  • Dealing with competition day and the run up.

Are there options for Trips and special sessions?

As part of the programme we offer bolt-on options that allow you to take advantage of our many trips and experiences.

How do you apply for this opportunity?

If you don’t want to book the whole lot, you can just select the ones you desire and then go from there.

What’s more we can offer a direct debit service where you pay a set amount per month, for example £2400 over 12 months would work out at £200 per month.

Just give us a call to talk through the logistics.
