3 Star Award Inland Kayaking

Get yourself of to a flying start in your new sport. This course provides the building blocks to become a white water paddler. The aim is to provide you with the tools to be able to be a competent performer in sheltered to moderate water environments and have the ability to paddle unsupervised, with similar standard paddlers. At the end of the course you will receive a personalized action plan, designed to guide you towards a successful assessment.

What can this course provide me?

The learning outcomes of this course are control, confidence and an understanding of how we interact with the outdoor environment. If you have an interest in the following development areas this course would have great benefits for you.

Personal Paddling Skills

  • How kayaking effects your posture, fitness and health in general.
  • Understanding the principles of boat control.
  • Increasing stability and balance in order to maintain control in unstable environments.
  • Rolling techniques and how this works in a moving water environment.
  • Establishing the link between paddling techniques and tactic.

Rescue Skills

  • Deep-water rescue techniques.
  • Towing and use of tow line.
  • Throw line techniques.

Safety, Leadership & Group Skills

  • Personal risk management.
  • Group Awareness.
  • Paddling sections of grade 2 water as part of a led group.

In order to be able to go forward we will provide you advice and help you to construct an action plan to continue your development and measure your achievements.

What experience do I need to go for my training?

After my training what does the assessment involve?

To move on to your assessment you will need to fulfil the following:

  • Evidence of at least 3 journeys on sheltered water and 3 on moving water which should include short stretches of grade 2. Either 10km should have been covered or approx 4 hours spent on the river. The trips should be on different rivers or different sections of the same river
  • Evidence of having paddled these with a group (3 or more) of similar standard paddlers, as well as an experienced coach.
  • The above can be proven via a logbook or verbal questioning for validity.
