4 Star Award Sea

This course provides the necessary foundation skills required to lead a group of up to 4 competent paddlers, on short 6-8 mile trips in moderate tidal water with winds not exceeding force 4. The emphasis is on performing appropriate and effective manoeuvres in response to real situations whilst judging the environment conditions and modifying rout plans as required. Planning and appropriate decisions making are an intricate part of this training course. At the end of the course you will receive a personalised action plan, designed to guide you towards a successful assessment.

Personal Paddling Skills

  • Practical Navigation
  • Efficient Paddle Technique and Tactics.
  • Manoeuvres and Tactics for the Environment.
  • Support Strokes and Rolling techniques.

Rescue Skills

  • Deep water rescue techniques
  • Towing
  • Incident management and leadership.

Safety, Leadership and Group Skills

  • Skilful application of leadership e.g. CLAP
  • Appropriate leadership strategies, judgment and decision making.
  • Safety awareness and dynamic risk management
  • Group control and management.

At the end of your training we suggest a development phase. This provides time to consolidate your new skills. We will provide advice and help you to construct an action plan to continue your development and measure your achievements.

What experience do I need to go for my training?

After my training what does the assessment involve?

To move on to your assessment you will need to fulfil the following:

  • Recognised first Aid Award
  • 3 Star Sea Award
  • Documented evidence of 10 sea trips (min of 4 hours duration)
  • 4 Star Training
  • Evidence of a BCU 1 day coastal navigation and tidal planning course or simulare RYA course.
  • At least two days logged experience of formal training in personal skills, and leadership prior to assessment.
  • 16 or over at time of assessment.
