4 Star Award Surf

Looking to push your surfing skills to the next level, then this is the one for you. The aim of the course is to provide you with a solid foundation from which to explore the possibilities of surf free-ride and freestyle.

What can this course provide me?

The learning outcomes of this course are on performance and leadership in advanced tidal environments. If you have an interest in the following development areas this course would have great benefits for you.

Personal Paddling Skills

  • Paddling techniques and tactics.
  • Deep take offs and tactics.
  • Surf Manoeuvres and tricks.
  • Wave routines and strategies.
  • Exit techniques.

Rescue Skills

  • Deep water rescues.
  • Swimming and self rescue techniques.
  • Dynamic rolling techniques.
  • Towing.

Safety, Leadership and Group Skills

  • Surf specific rescue equipment.
  • Tides and bathymetry.
  • Planning group awareness and safety framework.
  • Dynamic risk assessments.
  • Weather and surf forecasting.

At the end of your training we suggest a development phase. This provides time to consolidate your new skills. We will provide advice and help you to construct an action plan to continue your development and measure your achievements.

What experience do I need to go for my training?

The minimum requirements for 4 Star training:

 

  • It is recommended that you have your 3 Star Award or an equivalent level of ability.
  • In order to get the best out of this course we also recommend that you have a confident moving water roll.

After my training what does the assessment involve?

To move on to your assessment you will need to fulfil the following:

  • Completion of the 4 Star Training.
  • First aid award (minimum of 1 day training).
  • A minimum of 20 sessions in moderate surf conditions, including 3 different breaks and two different geographical locations.
  • Experience managing paddlers in a surf environment.
  • Candidates must be over 16 at the time of assessment, under 18’s cannot be deemed responsible for leadership by law until they turn 18.
