5 Star Award Open Canoe

This exciting 2 day course has been carefully designed to take tyou above and beyond the personal skill, leadership and safety requirements of the canoe five star canoe award. The course will cover the personal paddling skills required to lead on both white water and open water and examine the issues of leading groups in a range of different water conditions both by day or night. At the end of the course you will receive a personalised action plan, designed to guide you towards a successful assessment.

What can this course provide me?

Personal Paddling Skills

  • Efficient and effective grade 3 river running skills
  • Efficient and effective open water skills (wind up to force 5)
  • Lining techniques
  • Poling techniques
  • Navigation skills

Rescue Skills

  • Boat and bank based safety and rescue skills, including self rescue
  • Incident management and first aid in the 5 star environment
  • Being an effective team leader and team member in rescues/incidents

Safety, Leadership and Group Skills

  • With both experience and inexperienced advanced environment paddlers,
  • Application of leadership
  • Leadership strategies, judgement and decision making
  • Safety awareness and risk management
  • Group control and management

At the end of your training we suggest a development phase. This provides time to consolidate your new skills. We will provide advice and help you to construct an action plan to continue your development and measure your achievements.

What experience do I need to go for my training?

4 Star standard would be the appropriate level of performance for paddlers to begin working towards the White Water 5 Star Open Canoe Award.

  • The candidate must provide documentary evidence of a minimum of 30 varied, quality, advanced open canoe days in 3 different geographical areas.
  • The candidate is expected to perform all paddle skills on both side, where the test is undertaken as a tandem crew then each paddler needs to demonstrate the ability to operate at bow and stern.
  • First Aid Award (minimum of 16hrs)

After my training what does the assessment involve?

Assessments are over a minimum of two days with candidates leading throughout demonstrating paddling ability and leadership both in white water and exposed open water. Candidates must be 18 or over at the time of assessment, hold a current first aid award and have BCU coaching membership or private insurance. You will need the following to go forward for your assessment:

  • Confidence on grade 3 moving water, demonstrating a solid performance of all the 4 Star moving water skills, with anticipation and control. This involves descending rapids using controlled and efficient manoeuvres, using lines appropriately and paddling a loaded canoe.
  • Demonstrate the ability to control and manoeuvre your canoe in open water environments with a variety of wind and wave conditions, including being able to launch and negotiate waves created by winds up to force 5 over large fetch.
  • Demonstrate an ability to navigate on open water in adverse conditions. (in fair weather conditions, this may be assessed at night.)
