Introduction to Traditional

Traditional is all about taking Open Canoes and using them to there fullest potential in a range of environments. The program is designed to build on previous experiences and develop canoeists so that a range of options can be applied to any situations. By the end of the 5 day program you’ll have covered all the skills necessary to take your boat anywhere and have the knowledge to make progressive decisions.

What can Traditional provide me?

The learning outcomes of this program are totally geared towards exploiting the flexibility of open canoe. If you have an interest in the following development areas this course would have great benefits for you. This list is a sample of some of the areas we cover:-

  • Learn and gain experience in essential safety and leadership.
  • Expeditioning – The course includes a mini expedition and all the skills associated with this e.g. trip planning and map reading skills.
  • Training in Sailing, Polling and Lining and tracking in varied environments.
  • Performance skills on Grade 2-3(4) Rivers.
  • Tactical knowledge of selecting and achieving lines.
  • Efficiency in your application of technique and manoeuvres.
  • Boat and bank based scouting techniques including assessing risks and consequence.
  • Video analysis sessions to aid skill acquisition and efficiency.
  • Safety and rescue for open boating
  • Set a long-term action plan for your on going development.

In order to ensure you get the best learning opportunities available KJO use a range of creative debriefing tools each day. Throughout the week the KJO professional coaching experience will allow you to achieve multiple goals so as to balance and maximise your skill development.

What level of ability do I need to be?
