Introduction to Young Burners

This is an action packed progressive program, specifically designed for young boaters aged 13-16 who have a passion for river running and freestyle. During the week you’ll be coached on a progressive range of Grade 3/4(-5) creeks and rivers.

The week kicks of with our Liquidlogic endorsed ‘Park and Huck’ workshops, using the finest slabs, drops and falls. You’ll be learning all the latest creeking techniques and tactics whilst developing the necessary skill to help you make informed decisions on assessing rapids, understanding consequences and setting up safety.

Next up is freestyle. KJO have a huge range of experience when it comes to freestyle and coach both national teams and world class athletes. This part of the Juniors Burners program aims to develop and broaden your freestyle repertoire using our coaching expertise to boost your performance.

After taking time out to rip up waves and holes, we’re onto the ‘Classics’ as the program shifts focus to big volume rivers and the techniques and tactics needed to run them with precision and style.

What can Young Burners provide me?

This program as been special designed to accommodate young people’s performance needs. You will be coached in a diverse selection of skills to suit the ever changing needs of white water. From then on you’ll be coached on a progressive range of Grade 3/4(5-) rivers, learning all the skills you need to boat with confidence and control.

The learning outcomes of this program are totally geared towards performance and leadership. If you have an interest in the following development areas then this course will have great benefits for you. This list is a sample of some of the areas we cover:-

  • Understanding of physical demands in paddle sport.
  • All the latest steep-creeking and river running techniques.
  • Opportunity to learn the coolest freestyle moves around
  • Have a greater understanding of white water dynamics.
  • Tactical knowledge of selecting and achieving lines.
  • A greater understanding of mental rehearsal and how to best apply it.
  • Risk assessing and understanding consequences.
  • Confidence in your boating abilities, and understanding your limitations.
  • Learn and gain experience in essential safety and leadership.
  • Trip planning and map reading skills.
  • Regular video analysis sessions to aid skill acquisition.
  • Set a long-term action plan for your on going development

In order to ensure you get the best learning opportunities available KJO use a range of creative debriefing tools each day. Throughout the week the KJO professional coaching experience will allow you to achieve multiple goals so as to balance and maximise your skill development.

What level of ability do I need to be?

In order to get the best out of this course you should feel confident on grade 3/4- water. You must have a reliable white water roll (80%+ effective). You should also be reasonably fit as there may be a certain amount of trekking with boats involved. If you have little confidence with drops and falls or your roll is not confident, check out our Free-ride V2 or White Water Rolling Courses.
